Vein scan could help future Apple Watch detect non-touch gestures

The Apple Watch may in the future be able to detect gestures without relying on touch, by monitoring the veins in the user’s wrist The movement of the hand itself. The Apple Watch currently offers some simple gestures that users can use to function with this wearable device , but so far, the scope has been fairly limited. In terms of touch-free gestures, most users are familiar with holding up the Apple Watch to wake it up, or bringing the Apple The Watch is held up to the mouth to trigger Siri, but there’s certainly more room to increase the range of gestures.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday granted Apple a patent for a “vein-scanning device for automatic gesture and finger recognition. In this patent, Apple proposes to look at the veins inside a user’s wrist as a way to determine what action is being performed by the same hand. According to the patent, the system captures images of the veins in the user’s wrist as it is in various positions. It doesn’t need to capture images of all the veins, just a small group of veins with flow into the joint, and very small ones at that! Snapshot.

The system is needed to capture vein position, relative spacing, shape, displacement, and blood flow. By examining the vein’s position in a particular hand, the system has the potential to determine how the user moves the hand in general, and Infer what gestures they are making. The system can use a predetermined model to aid its detection, as well as a prediction system to refine the model and make inferences based on the confidence values to improve general detection. If the pose sequence is identified with a sufficiently high level of confidence, the detection system can confirm that a gesture has been performed based on the voxel movement and will transmitted to the rest of the computing system.

While it’s feasible for Apple to rely on a similar setup to its existing Apple Watch sensors to perform this vein detection, there have been suggestions that more sensors could play a role, including adding sensors to the area of the watch band that is on the opposite side of the wrist from the Apple Watch body itself, in order to get closer to the veins on the surface.

The declaration is said to be applicable to activities other than gestures on the Apple Watch, as it could assist other activity. It is said that the system can be used for input commands in AR or VR applications, a concept that would eliminate the need for gloves and could be used without adding to the Too much extra hardware provides more control over devices like the Apple Glass.
